I have a theory as to why John Lydon, the Sex Pistol formally known as Johnny Rotten, is all over my Google news feed. He’s trying to be relevant again. It’s sad that one of the original punk icons has turned into a whiny pissbaby. He has publicly said that universities are turning out people with shit for brains. “These people aren’t really genuinely disenfranchised at all, they just view themselves as special,” Lydon said.
I guess I shouldn’t expect anything less from someone who thinks it’s wrong to tear down statues of racist “heroes”. Was Lydon ever disenfranchised? I mean really disenfranchised? Probably not. All of those “special” people with “shit for brains” are out there protesting for civil rights. People are being killed for the colour of their skin and he is claiming that isn’t disenfranchisement. His Republican middle-aged straight rich white boy status protects him from damn near everything. He needs to bugger off.
Lydon is no longer Johnny Rotten to me. He’s turned into everything that the Sex Pistols and punk music rallied against and it’s sad.
Disappointment didn’t quite cover learning that Lydon is a Trump supporter. It’s totally cool to scream “God save the queen/The fascist regime” and then turn around and support someone truly fascist in Trump. Hypocrite.
There is a fine line between rebel and asshole, and John Lydon has crossed it. Yet, he is so full of himself that he thinks he’s above it all.
His latest tears are about how other members of the Sex Pistols have excused him from a documentary series based on the biography of Steve Jones, who played guitar for the Sex Pistols. He’s blocked the use of the Sex Pistols music from being used in the series because he’s being a petty little bitch. Now there is a huge court battle. Ironically, if Lydon doesn’t want this docu series being made, he’s giving a hell of a lot of publicity with his public tantrums. Now, if and when it gets made, people are going to want to see what all the fuss was about. He’s provided so much free publicity for this project and he’s not realized it.
He needs to grow the fuck up. At 60-something this behaviour isn’t edgy anymore. It’s pathetic. When you have to publicly state college students who are fighting for change by actively doing something (as apposed to paying lip service to a cause through a band while actually doing nothing) have “shit for brains” to get your name in the paper, your ship has sailed. Throwing tantrums in public because your former bandmates think you are a wanker doesn’t keep you relevant.
Go home. The show is over.
