Today I downloaded this document 30 Questions for Writers from one of the newsletters that I subscribe to for writers. Many of the questions were easy, at least I think they were, but I am cynical romantic idealist. Don’t ask me how that works as it would be difficult to explain. There was one question that I thought was quite interesting and I had to stop and think about it.
IF YOU COULD BE REINCARNATED AS ANY WRITER, WHAT TYPE OF WRITER WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO BE?
The wording of the question is odd mentioning reincarnation of any writer but then asking what kind of writer. This isn’t as simple as saying, “I would want to be reincarnated as Edgar Allan Poe.” Honestly, I don’t know who would want to be reincarnated as Poe. While he was a great and talented writer, his life was quite tragic. Why wish that upon yourself?
I’ve talked about my reading influences before, but this question brings them up again in a way. What kind of writer would I be? I would like to think that I would be a somewhat successful one. More than likely I would be a misunderstood one where reviewers asked the question, “What did I just read?” Maybe someone who wrote creative fiction or dystopic science fiction. I do have a lot of ideas for both. My style would be an amalgamation of Edgar Allan Poe, Chuck Palahniuk, and Douglas Adams with a bit of Neil Gaiman, Ursula K Le Guinn and Erma Bombeck thrown in. I would obviously be an odd writer. Eccentric even. I think I would fall under ‘cult author’ just because so many people wouldn’t get me. I am okay with that.
