Here’s a neat bit of information that people don’t know about. You can go into the Amazon Kindle store and type in the word “free” in the search bar and hundreds of free books come up. I’m talking contemporary books, not stuff in the public domain that can be found on Project Gutenberg. A note on public domain books, anything published before 1969 is now public domain because of expired copyrights. You won’t find them all through Project Gutenberg, but they are out there.
Back to Amazon. Most of the books up there have been published in the last three years. Some in the last five. A lot of the books are the first book in a series that the publisher is giving away free to build hype for an author’s new book in that series. A great way to find books that publishers have marked down or are offering free for a limited time as a promotion, is through BookBub. I’ve digressed again, but hey, who doesn’t want free books?
Every so often I go through the free books on Amazon and I find some gems. Doing this is also a good way to find books that you didn’t know about. Funny story I was sharing yesterday. As a kid and teenager I was very dependent on the library for books. We all know that libraries have a limited selection of books and I was genuinely afraid that I was going to run out of books to read. Little did I know at the time that upward of 600,000 books are published a year. I will never run out of things to read, and this is a huge relief, especially to 13 year old me. So many books are published that it is hard for bookstores to carry everything, and it’s not always easy going through e-books on a bookstore website. However, you do have to sort through some weird stuff sometimes.
For me, the weird stuff is the romance books. There are so many sub-genre’s, and some of them I really don’t understand. Now, I have read my share of historical romances. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine. I just can’t bring myself to read a “romance” book about an abused woman and the guy she loves and thinks she can change. I’m also not into alpha males. To each their own. I’m not going to judge. However, I am going to raise an eyebrow when a book describes itself as “A Reverse Harem Alien Warrior Romance”.
People, especially guys, like to say that romance books are porn for women. After going through the free books on Amazon today, I have to agree with that. I have discovered romance genres I didn’t realize were a thing. Here are just some of the romance sub-genre’s I came across outside of historical and paranormal romance:
- Curvy Girls/Big Beautiful Women (BBW)
- Alpha Male
- BBW and Alpha Males
- Tattooed Guys
- Sugar Daddies/Billionaire Bachelors
- Brothers Best Friend
- Single Fathers
- Love Hate/Enemies to Lovers
- Baby Daddy
- Military Guys
- Bad Boys
- Best Friends
- Reverse Harem
- Reverse Harem and Aliens
Who knew there were so many types of romance books? Whatever you are into you can easily track down romance books featuring it. I am sure there are plenty sub-genres that I missed. These genres are like porn fetishes. The difference between women’s romance books and porn is that there are emotions involved in romance books whereas porn is just sex. It’s always been said that women and men are turned on differently; men are more visual creatures and women more mental or something like that. Guess the plethora of romance genre’s is proof of that. Oh…and you can find books in all these genre’s free on Amazon.
